Hong Kong

POPULATION: 5.5 million.

LOCATION- At the tip of the Pearl River in eastern Guangdong Province. Hong Kong is three main sections: the New Territories and Kowloon on the mainland, and Hong Kong Island (it has another 235 islands, too).

CLIMATE: Subtropical, with mild winters, rainy springs, hot and humid summers and crisp autumns.

HISTORY: Long a neglected fishing village and barren rock, Hong Kong was ceded to the British in the middle of the 19th century. It has grown into a wonder of Asia, if not the world, ever since, with its industry (and industrious people), financial acumen and colorful, dynamic way of life. It returns to Chinese sovereignty in 1997.

ECONOMY: Largely industrial, with an emphasis on textiles, electronics and consumer goods, and commercial: it is, without a doubt, the gateway for trading with Asia and southern China.

TRAVELER,s NOTE: There is plenty to fascinate, entertain and entice the visitor in Hong Kong.

HONG KONG ISLAND TouR Cross the harbor to Hong Kong by tunnel and drive through the Central business district of Hong Kong. Proceed east through the "Suzie Wong" district of Wanchai and Causeway Bay, then up to Victoria Peak for a breathtaking view of the city and the harbor from 1,808 ft. (551 m.) above sea level. Cross to the south side of the island to Repulse Bay with its splendid beaches, and Aberdeen, where fishermen and their families live on junks and sampans. Return to Central District Aa Pokfulam, site of the University of Hong Kong, and Western District, one of the oldest parts of the territory.
